Our Clinic and Hospital

Durham Hospital

The Durham Medical Clinic and the Durham Hospital, which are connected by the “Link”, have become the focal point for health care for residents of West Grey, much of Southgate and the surrounding community.

The Durham Hospital was initially created in 1910 in a large home located on Countess Street North. It evolved by 1946 to be known as Durham Memorial Hospital, finally ending up on College Street North as part of the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, known as the Durham Hospital.

Now a 10-bed hospital, the excellent staff- doctors, nurses, laboratory and diagnostic imaging technologists, clerical, support, maintenance and housekeeping staff all provide top quality health care to improve the patient experience and speed their recovery in a safe and healthy environment.

West Grey and area residents and visitors are fortunate to have a highly-rated Emergency Department available to them. The Hospital also hosts one of the area’s few helipads to move patients quickly to further life-saving care when needed or to stabilize them while in transit from a northern site.

Annual fundraising efforts have resulted in many upgrades to purchase new medical and diagnostic equipment, improve patient care and safety and enhance the hospital facility.

To reach the hospital for non-emergency calls: 519-369-2340.  Call 911 for emergencies.

Durham Medical Clinic

The 14,109 square foot Clinic houses seven (7) family doctors along with their support staff, the Brockton Family Health Team, ActivEars Hearing Clinic,  Nurse Practitioner and Canadian Mental Health Association. The front line services are provided to the community by these allied health care professionals, with the doctors providing 24/7 Emergency Services at Durham Hospital.

The Clinic is owned and managed by the Durham Hospital Foundation. The Foundation is responsible and accountable to its tenants for maintaining the building to the required standards for health, safety, hygiene and cleanliness. The Foundation works closely with the family doctors and the Family Health Team to ensure the Clinic meets their needs and makes the necessary changes if and when necessary.

The construction of the Clinic was done in two phases with significant help from many generous individuals within the community through donations and time. The Foundation initiated the construction of the original 6,788 square foot Clinic, which opened in February 2005.

The original tenants included five family doctors, their support staff and a Lab. With the addition of two more doctors in 2008 and the possibility of bringing more services to the area via the Brockton Family Health Team, an expansion to the Clinic was initiated. The 7,321 square foot addition and a permanent Link to Durham Hospital was completed in June 2011.

The 2005 construction of the Clinic was funded through donations from the community and a Federal grant of $925,000. The 2011 addition was financed through a mortgage. Payments on this mortgage are covered by the annual rents from the Clinic tenants and  do not use donations or any proceeds from fundraising.

Whole Health Pharmacy

The Durham Hospital is fortunate to have a pharmacy on the premises. Staff can fill prescriptions for patients right after their appointments or trip to Emergency. Raj and Marion Rajput opened their pharmacy in 2011. They have been practicing pharmacy since 1991 and bring many non– traditional aspects of health care to their practice such as percussion and laser therapy, home health care, functional medicine, screening clinics, specialty compounding, homeopathy and blister packaging. They also carry a range of gift shop items so you can bring a little treat for a patient or pick up a forgotten toiletry item.

The staff pride themselves on service with a smile and offer local delivery and both in-store or at-home medication counselling. As independent owners, they can provide customized services and products- unique to Durham. The pharmacy is located in front of the hospital reception, near the Emergency Department. Patients and customers can call in their refills and pick them up with minimal waiting time. Durham Apothecary Remedy’s Pharmacy supports the hospital foundation; a portion of all sales is donated back to the hospital for ongoing improvements and new equipment for the hospital.
